More about the Spiritual Soil of Japan:

Japan enjoys freedom of religion. For most of the Japanese, however, religion is not personal. The majority still follow Shintoism and Buddhism. The polytheism of these religions explains the openness of the Japanese to so many of their offshoots and to multiple religious loyalties. Because the Japanese can be followers of more than one religious expression, it is estimated that 85% show some loyalty to Buddhism, 90% to Shintoism, and another 24% to new religions.
