I had the chance to stand in the Gulf of Mexico this week…and the Atlantic Ocean! Amazing to see the waves and the power and the expanse. I don’t know if you have had a chance to be on the edge of a great body of water like that, but every time I do, I am overcome with how huge the seas are. As far as my eyes can see…it’s blue. Water running into the sky at some faint line way out there beyond my reach and almost out of sight.
The largeness is even more impressive these days because of the recent storms that have ripped up the coast. The small rolling waves that lap up on the shore don’t look very harmful. But they make a sound that wipes out other sounds. The lifeguard stands had the Red Flag posted in the waters…so we had to be cautious of the rip tides. Those little waves could easily overtake my young kids and be fatal. When I wade out there a little ways, they overtake me.
I can’t imagine the power of the sea brewing in a hurricane or tsunami. We’ve seen the effects on TV. The power is massive. I seem so tiny on the edge of a quiet ocean. How insignificant in a massive storm I would be…
The power of our God is even greater than that. Listen to the lyrics of this song:
Let every created thing give praise to the LORD,
for he issued his command, and they came into being.
He established them forever and forever.
His orders will never be revoked.
Praise the LORD from the earth,
you creatures of the ocean depths,
fire and hail, snow and storm,
wind and weather that obey him,
mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars,
wild animals and all livestock, reptiles and birds,
kings of the earth and all people, rulers and judges of the earth,
young men and maidens, old men and children.
Let them all praise the name of the LORD.
For his name is very great;
his glory towers over the earth and heaven!
This song is found in Psalm 148
God is awesome…think about it…and praise Him today!
